This page is the main resource for abc-related
packages.
- BitMapMusic (Mac),
freeware music notation program from Kurt Kaufman (USA), suitable
for writing a few lines of music. It's good for those situations
where you don't want to be bothered with anything much more
complicated than "click and drag". That said, I don't think that
this is the tool for your next symphony.... :-) Printed output,
while limited to the screen resolution, is reasonable enough to
read comfortably. BMM can also export to PICT and JPEG format,
making it a useful tool for Music-As-Graphics and display on the
web.

- FlexiMusic Kids Composer, a fun, easy way for kids to learn the basics of music-making and recording, from FlexiMusic (India)
- GUIDO,
plain-text (i.e. readable and platform independent) language
capable of representing all information contained in conventional
musical scores, from Darmstadt University of Technology
(Germany). Supports GUIDO NoteServer, a free online service that
converts GUIDO Music Notation into conventional music notation
(CMN). It can be used for graphically notating musical pieces and
examples as well as for embedding music notation in web
pages.

- Mozart
(Windows), a music processor with which you can create
and edit sheet music, including chords and keyboard parts, from
David Webber (UK). Features include: instant transposition;
automatic quaver tail groupings; automatic bar-line entry; export
to MIDI files either "straight" or with "swing"; extensive
on-line help. This is my personal choice. It's hard to beat for
ease of use, price and functionality.
- Mup
(DOS, Linux, Unix), ASCII text-based, music publication shareware
from Akkra Enterprises (UK)
- Muscript (DOS,
Unix, Linux), a language for typesetting music, and a Perl script
which translates this language into Postscript for printing or
viewing, written by Peter Billam (Australia), freeware.
- Muse Music
Editor (Windows), a shareware music notation editor
for composers, arrangers or performers, from Laurie Griffiths
(UK). Create, edit, play (straight or with swing), print music
notation. Features include: automatic bar lines; automatic
transposition; automatic quaver tail grouping; export to MIDI
files; support for abc folk music notation (which gives access to
thousands of folk tunes on the web).
- MusicEase(USA),
combination music notation editor / automatic accompaniment
creator. As a full-featured, intelligent music notation editor,
it produces highly polished, publication quality, printed music.
It also automatically generates accompaniments consisting of any
number of general MIDI instruments including drums which you can
play, print or save as a MIDI file
- Music
Publisher (Windows), from Braeburn Software (UK). Music notation system. Braeburn Software has licenced the SharpEye music OCR engine and has incorporated it into MP Scan,
an add-on to Music Publisher with direct scanning into the
package ready for editing or transposing. It is particularly
effective at transposing existing music or making arrangements
and additions to printed scores.

Includes chord and guitar symbols, input from MIDI device
- musixlyr, a
MusiXTeX extension for convenient lyrics handling
- MusicWrite
Maestro (Windows), from Voyetra (USA). Notation software
for scoring for up to 48 parts using all clefs and transpositions
- from choir to concert band, orchestra to jazz ensemble - even
rock groups and singer/songwriters can use Music Write's guitar
tablature, chord generation and lyric features to notate and
print out their music. Includes MIDI capabilities for sequencing
and playback. Use MIDI keyboard or mouse-click for note entry
Record digital audio tracks right into Music Write 2000 and sync
them to notated parts. Music Write 2000 scores can be slaved to
MIDI time code or SMPTE for video and film scoring.
- Music

prints sheet music using a mouse or MIDI compatible keyboard;
cut, copy and paste; insert notes, chords and ties; add lyrics
and copyright info.
- MusiXTeX (Unix),
full-featured music typesetting via TeX, from GMD (Germany). This
page is also the main resource for other TeX-related notation
packages. Windows NT users may download an easy installable TeX
system from MikTeX
- Nightingale (Mac),
note-processor, from Adept Music Notation Solutions (USA).
Features include Import/export of Finale Enigma files, MIDI
files; includes Noteview which allows presentation (but not
copying or printing) of scores on the Internet

- NoteWriter (Mac), from Opus 1 Music (Canada), graphics-oriented music notation package which treats music images as graphics, so that any image can be placed anywhere on the page, giving a very high degree of flexibility in notation
- Noteworthy
Composer (Windows), shareware package
that lets you enter and edit written music at a PC keyboard,
import and export MIDI files, record live from a MIDI instrument
and gives a lot of control over printed scores. It also lets you
configure the playback, so you can mute staves to listen to just

support, but very flexible to use, the nearest thing to using a

- Personal Composer
(Windows), music notation, MIDI, sequencing, and publishing
program; from Denis James & Susan Miller(USA). A Dutch Version is also
available. Interestingly, this is said to be the world's first music/MIDI software for a desktop computer. It was originally written by Jim Miller, who set up for business in his garage in 1983.

- Sibelius (MAC, PC),
industrial strength note processor, MIDI sequencing and music

- Scorch Plug-in, from
Sibelius (UK), free software which lets you view, play, customise
and print Sibelius scores on the Internet. (You don't need
Sibelius yourself)
- SCORE Music Publishing System, from San Andreas Press (USA), industrial strength software that facilitate the creation of virtually any page of standard music notation with a final quality equal to that of true engraving (PC)

- Toccata
is a Braille music notation and transcription program produced by
Optek Systems (Australia). Optek Systems are now distributing
SharpEye (see below) with Toccata, but other programs can also be
used, eg SmartScore from Musitek
