Introduction

If the computer on which you are reading this is equipped with a sound-card, speakers and the necessary drivers, and if you have configured your WWW browser appropriately you can listen to any of the following items by clicking on its title.

MIDI beginners should read the Guide to Using MIDI Files.

The following sites should be checked for additional items:

Visit Standard MIDI Files on the Net to find other sites with MIDI files.

It is possible to use a MIDI file to produce a printed score. The best way to accomplish this is to use MidNotate, a specialised program for this task which has many advantages over conventional note-processors, not the least of which is its highly intuitive interface.

Note that public live or recorded live performances of music by living or recently deceased composers who are registered with performing right societies should be declared to the Performing Right Society or their equivalent in your country.

BEETHOVEN, Ludwig, van (1770-1827)

Allegro (6k) – transcribed by Nicholas Lander

Beethoven's involuntary contribution to the recorder repertoire was originally composed for a flute clock, a kind of miniature barrel organ driven by clockwork (often combined with a timepiece), with small organ pipes. There is a considerable number of compositions and arrangements by other well-known composers including Handel, C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart and even Wagner. A consort of recorders is an obvious vehicle with which to explore this repertoire. The present Allegro is the third of five signed autograph pieces in the Öffentliche Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek, Berlin.

The original score is held by the Chester Archeological Society.

This is a song that Captain Picard played on the Ressikan flute with the head of stellar cartography (female) in the episode of the same name, also in the Lessons episode. The tune seems to owe something to the Skye Boat Song, or perhaps it is the other way around. The instrument used to represent the Ressikan flute on the soundtrack is a recorder, the first musical instrument in space!

LE JEUNE, Henry (1636/7)

Gavotte pour les Flustes doucestranscribed by Nicholas Lander

Gavotte pour les Flustes doucesarranged by Richard Voss

In Harmonie Universelle (1636/7), Marin Mersenne suggested that recorders should be used like the 4' and 8' registers of an organ, by having a small consort (4') consisting of alto in f', two tenors in c', and a basset in f; and a large consort (8') of basset in f', two basses in b flat, and contra bass in in F. Thus the idea of the recorder orchestra was born.

Richard's arrangement is for mixed renaissance instruments, including recorders. My own transcription follows Mersenne's suggestions and is necessarily rather more staid.

Le Jeune's Gavotte pour les Flustes douces [sic.] was composed for Mersenne's Harmonie Universelle.

Adagio K. 617A (1791) (4k) – transcribed by Nicholas Lander

At the time he was composing Die Zauberflöte, Mozart wrote this Adagio for the blind Marianne Kirchgessner, a virtuoso on the glass harmonica which comprised a set of musical glasses revolving in water producing a clear, pure sustained sound. A consort of recorders is a good approximation of its timbre.

Cantata Il Rosignolo (Op.34 No. 1) for Soprano, Recorder & Continuo

Il Rosignolo (air), Allegro moderato (11k)
Recitativo (3k)
Col tuo mesto (air), Dolce (12k)

[The text is from a Scarlatti cantata]

Cantata Lascia piu' di tormentarmi (Op.34 #2) for Soprano, Recorder & Continuo

Lascia piu' di tormentarmi (air), Triste (6k)
Recitativo (1k)

Mio Core (Air), Allegro (18k)
